Kia Sportage – MPV

The new Kia Sportage was released in 2010 but it is only really gaining momentum in 2011, which is surprising given that it out-does its rivals from Ford, Audi, Citroen and Peugeot in the looks department. Speaking of those striking looks, the Audi TT designer Peter Schreyer is responsible for them and he’s really hit the nail on the head with this one, again.

The Hyundai x35 is said to share the same platform when it is released but for now the Kia has really made a stand in the MPV game. The angular yet smooth front and rear ends are fabulous and as the windscreen is steeply raked, it will help visibility and give more room in the cabin. The new Sportage is lower, wider and longer than before, which gives it an aggressive stance but also makes it more versatile, too. It has allowed for easier access to the vehicle for passengers and for loading the boot, which incidentally, is more than ample for your bags and other items. With the same platform as the Hyundai x35 the Sportage may have a 7-Seater version in the future.

Kia Sportage – Interior

Inside, the story just gets better, the dash is simple, functional and looks just as dramatic as the exterior. The buttons are nicely within reach and well-laid out, for on-the-move radio station changes. The seats are some of the finest around, even sports car makers should take note, as they are supportive yet comfortable and look great.

Kia Sportage – Engines

There are two engines to choose from to power your new Kia Sportage; a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 161bhp or a 134bhp 2.0-litre diesel. With either configuration, you can opt for manual or automatic gears, and two- or four-wheel drive. With those sporty looks and solid, aggressive stance, most Sportages will no doubt never see any muddy trails in their lifetime, so four-wheel drive is probably not needed. There will be two more engines available, the 1.7-litre 113bhp diesel and the 1.6-litre 138bhp petrol engine, but the choice motors would be either of the more powerful ones. The latter units will have stop-start technology and will be the economically-focused engines.

Kia Sportage – Road Grip

There must be a downside, I hear you ask, and there is. The handling of the Sportage is a little off-putting. It doesn’t grip the road as well as you’d like, especially compared to a Zafira or a C-Max, which is mainly due to the fact of the electro-hydraulic steering. It returns a vague, lifeless amount of information back to the driver which simply does not instil any confidence in it. Of course, you’re not going to drive a Sportage quickly, but you do need it to be a little more feel-some when it comes to turns. And the rear window is small. That’s it, no more downsides.

Kia Sportage – Seven Year Warranty

As Kia is renowned for offering a seven year warranty and doesn’t charge exorbitant prices for new purchases, the new Sportage starting at £17,000 is a bargain. If you can deal with the wayward handling but love the looks, the price, the efficient yet gutsy engines, then Kia’s new seven-seater is a well-rounded SUV.

Kia Seven Seaters

The Sportage is not currently a seven seat MPV. It only has five seats. The slightly larger but similar looking Sorento does have two flip up seats making it a a seven seat MPV. Kia Seven Seaters include the Compact Carens, Sporty Sorento (4wd) and the rather large Sedona.

It may be a few years old now but the Peugeot 407SW (SW stands for station wagon or estate car to you and me), is one of the most practical and solid cars that the French maker has ever built. Of course, there is the new generation of Peugeot cars out now, such as the 5008 MPV which also seats seven but if you’re on a tighter budget and don’t want a van-like seven seater, and then the 407SW could just be the key.

Similar to the 307SW with five normal seats the 407SW has two fold-down extra seats in the boot space. This maximises the space as when the added seats are folded away they don’t intrude too much on the 430-litres of boot space. With the rear seats folded down, that figure jumps to a monumental 1,365-litres. That’s more than enough for most people.

Powering the 407SW is the frugal, punchy 1.6 16x HDI 110bhp engine that is shared amongst other car manufacturers – it’s that good. The Citroen C5 and C4, Mazda 3, Ford Focus, Fusion, Fiesta and C-Max all share the same little oil-burner. It has a good shove at low revs, which makes it all the more easy to get up to motorway speeds without having to thrash it, although if you need to press-on, it does rev to 5,000rpm, which is frankly bizarre for a diesel!

Thanks to the wallop from the engine the gearing is made quite long so you don’t need to change gear all of the time, which is nice. That means when you’re cruising along on the motorway, the motor is only turning at 2,500 revolutions per minute, which makes a fantastic influence on fuel economy. It’s difficult not to achieve 40+mpg. If you opt for a higher-spec 407SW then you can set the cruise control at 70mph and take the stress off your right ankle.

One area that other manufacturers simply do not understand is that with a long and low car it can feel cramped and dark. Not so with the Peugeot. The full-length glass roof is perfect for lightening the cabin and is slightly tinted which helps keep the sun from beating down on the passengers. The added light helps you keep an eye on what the kids are getting up to in the back more easily, too.

The 407SW is as practical as an estate car can be. The rear boot lid glass opens separately to the boot door, which is perfect for dropping your shopping in and keeps things from falling out. The seats are incredibly comfy, apart from the rearmost seats, which should really be used for short trips.

The Peugeot 407SW 1.6 HDI 110 SE will set you back a smidge under £18,000 while the 2.0 HDI engine, which has even more punch than the smaller power-plant costs an additional £1,000. For a pseudo-limo with seven seats, cruise control, steering wheel-radio buttons, climate control, traction control and electric windows, mirrors and wipers, it’s a bargain. It looks great too, more dominating than say a Mondeo or an Audi A4, both of which don’t have the luxury of those extra two seats.

Renault 7 Seater Cars

Through linkups with historic tuning companies, the Renault manufacturer has generated or been associated with some of the greatest sporting cars in history, including several Gordinis, the historic Alpine range of coupes and the legendary R5 Turbo. The company has introduced or driven the development of key technologies that have altered the state of motoring technology on and off the track, including four-wheel drive and engine turbocharging.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Renault’s participation in Formula One racing brought the world some of the greatest races and Grand Prix cars. Renault almost single-handedly dragged a then-luddite Formula One world into the era of turbo-charged beasts.

Few people are aware of the fact that a Renault won the first ever Grand Prix race, held in 1906. Renault also has an important heritage of working closely with Lotus in Formula One.

Renault cars are today produced under a co-operation agreement with Citroen and Peugeot, called PSA. PSA is run under an alliance with Japanese automaker Nissan that makes it the third-biggest car maker in the world.

The Renault company’s colourful history of sometimes weird and wonderful vehicles continues today, with several interesting MPVs and mini-MPVs being available. In the UK, we get the Modus and Grand Modus, the Kangoo, the Scenic and Grand Scenic, the Espace and the Grand Espace.

Not all of these can carry seven or more passengers. We’ll focus on the truly roomy people movers in this bunch, the Renault Seven Seater Cars, namely:-
