Not everyone will be lucky enough to afford the New Toyota Hybrid Alpha with 7-Seats, however there are lots of things you can do to make your 7-Seater to perform better and be more environmentally friendly. Not only will you be more “Green” but you will save money on fuel costs too. There are quite a few things that you should do but here are a few points to get you started:-

Next year could be the dawn of a new age in ecologically-friendly motoring with the arrival of the Nissan Leaf, (5 Seats) and Toyota Prius Alpha (7 Seats).

The Nissan Leaf, an all-electric vehicle, has been voted European Car of the Year for 2011. It garnered 257 points, narrowly beating runner-up, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, which collected 248 points. With 244 points, the Meriva from Opel/Vauxhall came third.

The Leaf won 20 top points from judges keen to highlight the importance of launching a mass-produced electric car onto the market. This was also the first time an all-electric vehicle reached the final round of voting.

Not long ago, such cars were considered laudable but not serious options for the mass market. Today, however, motorists can choose from a wide range of alternative-fuel, hybrid and all-electric vehicles.

Until just over a decade ago, electric vehicles were seen as limited in both utility and appeal. This view has changed since the hybrid-electric Toyota Prius was launched in the US in 1997. Not only was the Prius the most fuel-efficient petrol car in America in 2009, but it found fame as the choice of ecologically-minded celebrities. The Prius will be adapted, and called the Alpha, it will have two additional seats in the rear making it a 7 seater car.

Recent years have seen a boom in the appeal and availability of electric and other types of environmentally-friendly cars. This is perhaps best highlighted by the establishment in 2003 of Tesla Motors in the Silicon Valley.

In January of this year, Tesla produced its 1,000th Roadster. The Tesla Roadster is a minimalist all-electric sports car that accelerates like a supercar. Even with this performance, Tesla Motors says the car has twice the energy efficiency of a Toyota Prius.

With a base price of US$109,000 (£70,000), the Tesla Roadster is not exactly cheap, mass-market motoring. The Roadster does, however, play an important role both in the development of the new technologies needed for electric vehicles and in boosting public awareness of the potential and the application of these technologies.

Meanwhile, General Motors is banking on its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid-electric saloon to help lead the recovery of the recently-bankrupt automaker. In the US, Chevrolet is only awaiting ratings labels from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before shipments of the car start in 2011.

When it goes on sale, the Volt is expected to be rated at a combined composite EPA fuel economy rating of 60mpg. This will better that of the Toyota Prius. Pricing, too, should be competitive, once government tax credits are taken into account. The Volt will be the first mainstream plug-in hybrid car sold in the US.

The Volt will also be sold in other markets around the world under the Holden, Vauxhall and Opel brands. Tesla Motors, too, is busy developing its own family saloon though this will be all-electric and is likely to be priced notably higher than the Nissan Leaf, the Chevrolet Volt or the Toyota Prius.

Well-known performance car brands, too, are keen to give drivers green-motoring options and have been busy developing technologies that combine low-emissions with high-performance. Famous German automaker Porsche has been competing in motorsports with its 911 GT3 R Hybrid racer.

This special competition version of the historic 911 sports coupe design uses advanced mechanical flywheel technology to store energy captured under braking. Under acceleration, this energy is then released as electrical power for two electric motors that provide a turbocharger-like boost of acceleration.

Whether you’re keen on helping the planet or just want to enjoy the visceral thrills of a modern performance car, it looks like concern about the environment should give you what you need. For both speed freaks and tree-huggers, and those needing seven seaters, next year could be a landmark in the effective progress of green motoring.

During the 2010 LA Auto Show held recently in the US, Toyota and Tesla took the wraps off an electric SUV concept vehicle called the RAV4 EV.

This is the first electric vehicle that Toyota has developed with Tesla, which is perhaps better known to motorists as the company behind the sporty all-electric Tesla roadsters that look like Lotus sports cars.

Unlike most car show concept vehicles, however, the RAV4 EV is no mere static mock up meant just to wow with looks and little else. Toyota will be putting the RAV4 EV into limited production and says it will build 35 vehicles for use in a demonstration and evaluation programme running through next year.

Toyota says it plans to introduce a final production version in the US in 2012. In the US, the regular RAV4 is available with an optional third-row bench seat, making it a seven seater. There is no word yet if this option will also be available on the RAV4 EV.

In the UK, there is currently no option to purchase the RAV4 with a full seven seats. This means British motorists seeking seven seats from Toyota have to opt for the mammoth LC V8 or the smaller but superb Verso.

There is also no word yet on whether the RAV4 EV will be made available in the UK. This means that those of us looking for truly green seven-seat motoring from Toyota may be stuck with the recently-announced Prius Alpha hybrid, which is slated to arrive in Britain next year.

Toyota says it is aiming to give the final production version of the RAV4 EV a real-world range of 100 miles. The concept vehicle shown at the LA Auto Show is based on the existing production Toyota RAV4 and uses a Tesla electric power train.

Jim Lentz, who heads up Toyota Motor Sales US, spoke to the press about the relationship between Toyota and Tesla. He said the joint work by Toyota and Tesla was driven by Toyota President Akio Toyoda’s desire to implement a new development model incorporating Tesla’s fast-moving and streamlined approach.

Tesla had the job of producing and providing the battery and associated parts in accordance with engineering specifications set by Toyota. These specific requirements governed things like performance, quality and durability.

Toyota, on the other hand, had the job of leading the project’s development and manufacturing. Toyota was also tasked with ensuring the seamless integration into the vehicle of the power train delivered by Tesla.

Jim Lentz added that customer experience was the focus from the beginning. The aim was to produce a vehicle with drivability characteristics that replicated as closely as possible those of the regular RAV4.

Though based on the conventional production RAV4, the Toyota RAV4 EV shown at the LA Auto Show came with a range of exterior styling cues that differ from those on the RAV4 currently offered for sale in the UK. The RAV4 EV carried such changes as a new front bumper, grille and fog lamps, as well as headlights, unique EV badges and a custom paint colour that is exclusive to the EV.

Inside the cabin, the EV boasts custom seat trim, multimedia displays in the dashboard and a push-button gear selector. Perhaps of greatest interest, however, is the fact that the EV sacrifices no luggage space compared to the conventional RAV4.

Now, if only we can get our hands on this car here in the UK, our green seven-seater SUV dreams will have come true.
