The Malaysian car manufacturer Ssangyong has been around for years, always just missing the mark with their cars and pitting them against rivals such as Mercedes, Ford and other well-established car makers. New Rextons in the UK do not currently have 7-Seats, but older models do. I’m sure they will be re-modelled soon to include a 3rd Row of bench seats.

In a bid to turn the tables, in a ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ fashion, the latest Rexton is powered by an older generation Mercedes engine and the styling is far better than that of past models such as the Musso.

While it still looks very similar to other Asian cars, the design is clean, sophisticated and similar to the Chevrolet Captiva 7-Seater, which is also a funky-looking SUV. With sporty addenda, such as alloy wheels, a rear roof spoiler, side skirts and lower front air dam, the option-ticked Rexton certainly does look the part and will appeal to a wider audience.

The two Mercedes-sourced engines, both 2.7-litres, are fantastically reliable and a good move for Ssangyong. There are 163 or 183bhp models, which are mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox. The lower-powered one needs thrashing a little to get it moving and can sound coarse. The more powerful model is still a little lethargic but it is the choice motor for a vehicle with the Rexton’s bulk. If using it off-road, which the chassis is more than capable of doing, the extra grunt is much appreciated.

The drive train is either part-time or permanent four-wheel drive, depending on the model selected. The 270ES, for example, has selectable four-wheel drive while the SPR edition always has power running through all of the wheels. There is a low-transfer gearbox too, for when the rough conditions get even rougher.

The ride and handling of the Rexton aren’t of Mercedes quality, but there are very few off-roaders that are as good on the road as they are off. The suspension is a little wobbly and that causes body roll through the corners, but on the rough stuff it helps absorb big compressions. The steering is heavy and sometimes can feel unassisted, but that again gives a truer feel of which way the wheels are pointing. It’s certainly not a full-time school-run type of car.

The big, knarly off-road tyres don’t help the handling on the road either. They can be changed to something that would suit a BMW X5, but as standard fitment, the tyres don’t bite into the road as much as they do the dirt and mud. Again, that blend between off-roader and on-roader simply can’t appease everyone.

With the big frontal area and those tyres, the wind and road noise is fairly high, but there is plenty of sound-proofing and a good CD player to drown it out. The interior is spacious and for those with large families, seven seats are a blessing. There are airbags aplenty, climate control, traction control and large, comfy, arm chair-like front seats. The further back in the cabin you go, the less space there is, but the capacity is adequate for short journeys and great for carrying luggage, too.

Fiat has just announced a new seven-seat MPV called the Freemont. Scheduled for launch in mainland Europe in the latter half of 2011, the Freemont is unlikely to be available in Britain.

The Freemont is based on the Dodge Journey from Chrysler and will be produced at the same plant in Mexico. Visually, the Freemont will differ slightly from the Dodge but most engine options will be produced by Fiat.

The Freemont will be the first product to come out of Fiat’s partnership with Chrysler, which is effectively already controlled by the Italian industrial conglomerate. Fiat recently bumped its holding in Chrysler Group up to a quarter, from the 20 per cent share Fiat bought from bankruptcy administrators a couple of years ago.

Chrysler has already offered limited sales of the Dodge Journey in Europe. The Fiat Freemont attempts to capitalise on the automakers’ relationship by producing a more Europe-friendly version of the MPV for distribution through Fiat’s 5,000-plus European dealers.

The biggest change from the Dodge Journey will be the line-up of engine options. According to media reports, the Freemont will initially be available with front-wheel drive and a selection of 140hp or 170hp four-cylinder MultiJet turbocharged diesel engines from Fiat. Both engines will drive the car through manual transmissions.

The Freemont range will later be expanded to include an all-wheel drive powertrain with motivation from Fiat’s 170hp MultiJet engine or a 3.6-litre, 276hp V6 petrol engine. An automatic transmission, also produced by Chrysler, will be available later.

Equipment levels should be good. Though interested parties will have to wait for the official unveiling of the new model at Geneva Motor Show 2011 in March, initial reports indicate even base equipment levels will include a range of luxury touches.

The Freemont will reportedly include not just seating for seven people, but keyless entry, three-zone automatic climate control, a touch-screen radio/navigation system and fog lights. Higher up the range, the Freemont will likely come with Bluetooth connectivity, a multimedia interface that reads both SD cards and DVDs, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, parking sensors and integrated roof rails.

The Freemont will also benefit from a range of technology and features that boost safety. The Hill-holder feature makes starting while facing up hills with manual transmission both safer and easier. Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) technology works to reduce the risk of rollover in what is a tall and potentially unstable class of vehicle.

The Freemont will also come with seven airbags, Brake Assist, ESP (electronic stability programme) and ABS (anti-lock braking system). Externally, the Freemont boasts useful dimensions. It is 489cms long, 188cms wide and 172cms tall. The outstanding roominess in the cabin is further boosted by a class-leading wheelbase of 289cms.

At the moment, it looks likely that the UK will not enjoy the Fiat Freemont, at least officially. Fiat says it is reviewing the situation regarding official UK sales but it is anybody’s guess when British motorists might be able to buy this stylish new seven-seat MPV.

Fiat Doblo Family Edition - 7 Seater MPV

In the meantime, UK drivers shopping for a seven-seat vehicle at Fiat have only the company’s Doblò family of eccentric, boxy MPVs from which to choose. Though both practical and full of character, the Doblò sits firmly in a different sector of the market from the Freemont.  The Fiat Doblo Family Edition is a 7 Seater MPV, other Fiat MPV’s include the Six Seater Fiat Multipla and the 6 or 8 Seat Fiat Scudo Combi.

Fiat, itself no stranger to financial calamity, initially took control of 20 per cent of shares in Chrysler following the firm’s bankruptcy in 2009. Fiat has since then raised its holding to 25 per cent, with plans to further increase its shares in Chrysler on the cards in the near future.

The MPV is becoming an ever-increasingly popular vehicle for families, and now with the added luxury of having those addition two seats, there is no limit on how popular these vehicles can become. The practicality that comes with owning one of these vehicles is unmatched, whether it for be for transporting seven people all at one, or even folding down the back row and having an increased boot, it makes moving people and objects from A to B a lot easier. We all know that sometimes five-seats just aren’t enough so the seven-seaters with the option of folding down the rear two seats are extremely handy for all occasions. Below I’ve broke down the ever-expanding list of seven-seat MPVs to just five of the best options for you – it should be noted that these are in no particular order.

Citroen C4 Grand Picasso

The C4 Grand Picasso offers a family friendly driving experience as well as being relatively cheap and practical.

The shear size of the C4 means that you shouldn’t have any trouble packing in everything you could possibly need to take with you on any one journey. The two rearmost seats will fold flat in a matter of seconds to create a rather large sized boot. The Picasso is a good looking car which offers a good, easy drive and a good selection of engines to choose from. Prices for the C4 Grand Picasso start at around £18,405, not the cheapest in the segment by any means, but certainly not the most expensive.

Toyota Verso

The Verso is a practical, reliable and well built car that is more than capable of being used as a people carrier. Seven seats are standard on this model and, like the Grand Picasso, the rear five can be folded flat to increase passenger and luggage space.

That being said, the third row of seats is more suited to small children than adults as the space available isn’t great. Toyota’s ongoing drive to be seen as a ‘green’ manufacturer is continued with this model, offering economical CO2 emissions and a good fuel economy. Prices for the Toyota Verso start at around £17,000.

Mazda5

The Mazda 5 has been given the ‘Nagare’ design, which basically makes the car look like it has a wave running through the side of it. These ‘waves’ are said the better the aerodynamics of the Mazda and also work alongside the new engines to improve the fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Though travelling at speed can make for a noisy cabin, the handling and steering of the Japanese car really make up for it.

The rear sliding doors add more practicality to this car, though other manufacturers are starting to follow suit and incorporate sliding rear doors into their own cars. Prices for the Mazda 5 start at £17,695.

Citroen Berlingo Multispace

The Berlingo Multispace is in no – and cannot be confused with – a good looking car. It is, in fact, a van with some windows slapped on. Although that is not to take away from the brilliantness of it all.

Citroen Berlingo MultiSpace - Cheap 7 Seater

One of the cheapest models on the market, the Berlingo comes with a huge interior and good quality materials – assumedly something you’re after if you want an MPV. The standard Berlingo comes as a five-seater with the extra two seats coming as part of an additional ‘Family Pack’. This would indicate that although there is seven seats, the space and comfort that comes from them may not be quite as good as other cars in the market. It probably wouldn’t be your first choice were you looking for a seven-seat MPV but a car as cheap as it is, it worth a look at. Prices start at around £13,000.

Volkswagen Touran

To finish of the top five I’ve decided to include the Volkswagen Touran. It is a very well built vehicle from the German manufacturers with an upmarket interior that will make you feel like you’re behind the wheel of a premium car.

Seven seats come as standard on this vehicle, unlike some others in the segment, and using some clever storage technology, the middle row of seats and move forwards, backwards, be folded down or removed completely. On top of that, the middle seat of the second row can also be turned into a mini table when it isn’t being occupied. The superb technology, mixed with comfort, practicality and space make the Volkswagen an excellent choice when it comes to picking a seven-seat MPV. Prices start at £17,585 for the new Touran.
