The Japanese automaker has built on recent success with its super-sleek light commercial vehicle by announcing a new version for India that will be built in partnership with Ashok Leyland. It will see production begin at its plant near Chennai, in the south of the country. The India launch has been scheduled for the middle of the year and there is plenty more happening with the NV2000 elsewhere around the globe, too.

Perhaps the vehicle’s biggest coup to date was the announcement in May last year that it had won an exclusive new contract to provide New York City with 13,000 new cabs, starting from next year. This means it will be decked out in yellow and will be a mainstay of Manhattan and elsewhere across the Big Apple as part of a 10-year deal.

The European 1.5-litre diesel version does an impressive 54.4 miles per gallon in average driving conditions, but a new electric version of the NV2000 is also planned and could be a part of the New York City cab fleet by 2017, according to Nissan.

So what has made the Nissan NV2000 such a sensation since it was first launched as a concept vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show back in 2007? Well, the vehicle seems to have been able to turn what would appear to be a major weakness into a key strength. After all, not many van lookalikes manage to make it big in the passenger vehicle segment, especially with the advent of the SUV crossover 7-seaters that have taken the European and North American markets by storm in recent years.

Perhaps that is the secret of the NV2000. Where four-wheel drives and SUVs managed to evolve into large family vehicles that still look sleek and sporty, this Nissan vehicle seems to have followed, reinventing the concept in the van segment. After all, it looks like a van and can be used for cargo or transporting several passengers at once. But it does more than that.

Subaru – Sales Increase

It has been a tough year for Japanese automakers following the tsunami in March but Subaru, the maker of a number of SUVs and 7-seaters, said it has seen a big increase in sales in the world’s biggest car market, the US. This success has been a long time coming as the automaker has previously struggled in America’s competitive big car market.

Tribeca – Sales Increase

The Tribeca saw an increase of nearly 13 per cent in sales volumes in 2011 in the US, albeit only 2,791 vehicles were sold. But this still represents significant progress for Subaru for a vehicle that is a sleek option in the crossover SUV market, particularly the latest version which underwent a major facelift in 2007.

Subaru Tribeca – Performance

The Tribeca offers a very capable 3.6-litre engine that generates 256 break horsepower, which is a more powerful improvement on the original 3-litre engine it came with following its 2005 launch. Despite the upgrade, Subaru claims a 10 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency. This compares well with other 7-seaters in the same segment of the market. In terms of four-wheel drive, it is the only vehicle in its class that comes with all-wheel drive as standard.

Subaru Tribeca – Appearance

Look-wise, the Tribeca is an attractive machine. The latest version has been modified with more rounded tail lamps and a reshaped rearmost window, meaning it manages to stay sleek despite packing in a sizeable bulk.

Subaru Tribeca – Trim Levels

It comes in two distinct trim levels, the Standard and the Limited. The latter version adds a sunroof, roof rails, a leather interior and a six-disk CD changer. The other difference with the Limited version is a multifunction screen that displays the audio set-up, navigation information, outside temperature and maintenance intervals. Plus on the third row there’s a video input for the DVD entertainment system.

Subaru Tribeca – Boot Space

Given it’s a crossover, the amount of Boot space is impressive. The Tribeca can pack in 2.11 cubic metres of whatever needs to be thrown in the back, with both the second and the third rows of seats able to fold down. With the back row folded, there is still more than a cubic metre of space available.

Subaru Tribeca – Safety

It’s a safe vehicle too, although it doesn’t do anything ground-breaking compared to the likes of the Volvo 7-seaters out there, with six air bags as standard. There are two in the front, two side-impact air bags and curtain airbags on the side that come down between side doors for the front and second row.

Subaru Tribeca – Reasonable Price

The Tribeca is a good all-rounder that comes in at a reasonable price for the amount of kit and the sleek styling on offer. So why hasn’t it done better? Well, Subaru has confined sales of the vehicle to North America, which remains competitive in this segment, and it’s only in a handful of other markets including South America and parts of East Asia.

Subaru Tribeca – US only

To get one in Europe means you need to import, an impractical option. To get the numbers up even more then, Subaru needs to get the Tribeca into showrooms in the UK and the rest of Europe, but with no plans in the making, UK auto buyers shouldn’t hold their breath.

News about Forthcoming 7-seaters

The Delhi auto show in India, the second major show of the year following the Detroit motor show, has unsurprisingly thrown up a great deal of news about forthcoming 7-seaters and SUVs which are due to hit the subcontinent. Among the most notable news was the continued collaboration between Indian motor company Mahindra & Mahindra and South Korea’s Ssangyong.

The Indian company has come to an agreement to sell the Ssangyong Rexton in India within the next six months. The deal will see the Ssangyong SUV assembled by Mahindra, as a knock-down vehicle, before it is retailed across the country. Mahindra said it is looking to sell up to 600 Rexton units every month once assembly gets to full capacity. The vehicles are due to be badged with the Mahindra logo at Mahindra’s Chakan facility, which will become the second outside of South Korea to fully assemble Ssangyong vehicles.

Domestically, the vehicle is assembled at the South Korean firm’s plant in Pyungtaek, while the only other overseas facility for constructing the Rexton is situated close to the Indian mainland in Peliyagoda, Sri Lanka.

Ssangyong Rexton

The Rexton has already been around for more than a decade and is based on the Mercedes Benz M-Class. The first version of the vehicle, produced until 2006, was a four-door SUV with a choice of three engines: 2.7-litre and 2.9-litre diesels, and a 3.2-litre petrol engine manufactured under licence by the German automaker. It was popular in Europe, particularly in England, and has since been introduced to other new markets.

Since the first model, there have been second and third-generation Rexton released in various parts of the world, almost all with a choice of 5-seater and 7-seater configurations, but the first officially sanctioned vehicles in India will not roll off the assembly line until around the middle of the year, according to Mahindra.

Although the exact details of the version to be launched in India remain unconfirmed, it will almost certainly be similar to the third generation Rextons which include a catalysed diesel particle filter which was designed to reduce emissions.

Rexton flagship model

The Rexton will be the flagship model among a series expected in conjunction with Ssangyong over the coming years. Just this month both Mahindra and Ssangyong announced plans for another smaller SUV, the Korando C, which is due to be released in India in 2013. Both this vehicle and the Rexton are due to be sold at Mahindra outlets.

Mahindra acquired 70%

This increase in collaboration between the two companies is hardly surprising in light of the troubles that have hit Ssangyong in recent years. Mahindra acquired a 70-per cent share in its Korean counterpart less than a year ago after the deal was approved by the Fair Trade Commission of South Korea following bankruptcy protection.

Following the link-up, the companies have announced a series of collaborations. In the short term, this means India will see an influx of 7-seater vehicles from the South Korean automaker in a market which is dominated by small-engine SUVs at the lower end of the price scale.
