High MPG but more space

In an age when carmakers are producing an ever-growing number of crossover SUVs with increasingly low fuel demands and interiors that defy the amount of space available, Hyundai is taking this concept one step further. Set to unveil this weekend in New Delhi, India, at the second major motor show of the year following Detroit, the new Hyundai Hexa Space is an incredibly compact people carriers with a remarkably small 1.2-litre turbocharged GDI engine.

Unique Hexagonal Seating Configuration

Where Hyundai Hexa is truly revolutionary is in its unique hexagonal seating configuration, hence its name. The interior layout works courtesy of two floor runners, on which six seats on the first and second rows slide to create what approximates to three rows of seating, but is in reality is more like five rows. The standard format sees the driver’s seat and the other main front passenger seat the farthest forward, but then there is a middle front-row seat which is slightly farther back. This means the middle seat on the second row is set slightly farther back. On the third row, there is no middle seat; instead the two seats are separated to create the necessary space for the middle seats.

Up to Eight Seats

The overall effect of the seating is a tightly-packed seating configuration that accommodates up to eight people in total, in a cabin whose total length is shorter than just about any other three-row vehicle out there, the only compromise being that width-ways, space is a bit more confined than in your average 7-seater. This is made up for courtesy of the substantial amount of headroom available in the Hyundai Hexa.

Fold Flat Seats

As Nissan points out, the hexagon makes for a natural fit. In nature, the likes of honeycombs are made of hexagons and in architecture, this shape is renowned as a robust space-saver, so why not use it in car seating configuration? Like other 7-seaters on the market, the Hexa features seating that can be folded flat to the floor to create extra space, and again, this is where the vehicle comes into its own. Because each seat is effectively a free agent, it can be folded down separately to offer a greater degree of flexibility. All eight seats can be folded flat to the floor when camping, for example, or just the back row when shopping or even just one or two seats to accommodate awkwardly-shaped pieces of furniture. The options are limitless.

Unclear when this concept will be launched

Other than the revolutionary seating system, the interior is a fine piece of modern design, with its sleek pastel lines and futuristic look and feel. Hyundai has said the vehicle is designed for young families living in the city, those in their 30s and 40s, and most likely those in Asia. It remains unclear, as yet, when and where this new vehicle will be launched, given it remains a concept which is being developed by the South Korean automaker. Expect an Asian launch to begin with, followed possibly by Europe being given a smaller dimension of the car. And expect a lot more detail to come out of Delhi before the end of the month.

Geneva Motor Show 2012

Although we wont be attending the Delhi motor show we will be going to Geneva. Were we are hoping to find out more information. Hopefully we’ll get to take more pictures of the Hyundai Hexa and even get to sit inside this Concept MPV.

Other MPVs from Hyundai that are currently available in the United Kingdom include the i800 (eight seater) and the Hyundai Santa Fe (4WD).

Chevrolet Orlando – 7 Seat MPV

The Chevrolet OrlandoMPV is no ordinary vehicle. First of all, it’s available in Canada and not in the USA, a rarity in the North American market. Most importantly, it’s a really compact 7-seater that delivers something different. It’s all part of the recent collaboration between the US automaker General Motors and Daewoo of South Korea.

Sporty and compact appearance

The Chevrolet Orlando is still a young MPV and that shows – it’s part of the new wave of 7-seaters that have moved away from that extended truck look to something more sporty and compact. From the front, this Chevrolet looks like a compact coupe such is the design. It’s sleek, modern with a front grill and lamps that perfectly disguise the bulk that comes behind. But it’s not that bulky, in fact with all the seats taken up this is a vehicle with a small amount of storage space, just 3.6 cubic metres. This is where the compromise of this vehicle comes in.

Storage Space

While the Chevrolet Orlando People Carrier can seat 7 passengers in relative comfort, that drastically reduces the storage space available. But then when the third row of seats is folded in the floor that storage space suddenly expands to over 56 cubic feet. There is no option to fold down the front passenger seat which means longer items become difficult to accommodate. That puts it in a similar class bracket to the likes of the Kia Rondo and the Mazda5, both of which are also similar in terms of price.

Purchase Price

Purchase costs start at just over £16,000 and depending on what extra bits and bobs you get go up to £22,000 and above. For information on MPG, CO2 emissions and the Car Tax bracket read our full review Chevrolet Orlando review here.

The advantages here though are obvious. For families living in the city that need more than 5 seats then this is extremely difficult to beat. It can squeeze into tight spaces and it won’t get clogged up in the traffic. And this ties in very well with the price because this is not an expensive 7-seater, and that means it’s ideal for young families both in terms of size and price. But how does it handle and perform?

Performance

The engine is both economical and powerful – it’s the 2.4-litre Ecotec which produces 174 horsepower. That gets it from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about 10 seconds which is about standard for a 7-seater in this class. It’s therefore no speedster but then it’s hardly a slouch either. And even with 7 people along for the ride the Chevrolet Orlando cruises at high speeds comfortably.

Additional Features

In terms of features, this is a treat. There’s a button that activates the child locks and the rear window locks at the same time. Plus there is a nifty little compartment that hides the USB port and auxiliary outputs. It handily plugs in an iPod and hides it away, a cool feature indeed. There are a host of features that come as standard. Power lock doors, air conditioning, cruise control, CD and MP3 with 6 speakers and a driver information centre all come at the standard price. Options include aluminum wheels, Bluetooth and satellite radio. Overall then, the Chevrolet Orlando delivers a whole lot of car at a price and look that feels anything but over-sized.
