MPV – what is it?

There are many of meanings for the term MPV. I automatically assumed that it was closely linked to people carriers, some of which had seven seats. However a search on the internet produced far more descriptions for the Acronym “MPV” than I ever imagined.

MPV – A Car

In my dictionary MPV only means multi purpose vehicle, but it is more often than not used to describe a family car. MPV doesn’t mean that a car has 7-Seats but it is quite often used as a term for such vehicles.

MPV – Multi Purpose Passenger Vehicles

There’s a double “P” here but that doesn’t seem to bother whoever came up with this acronym.

MPV – Mine Protected Vehicles

These are most used in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. They are vehicles that are super strong that will withstand ambush.

MPV – Bloods

Mean platelet Volume is a calculation made on the number of platelets that you have in your blood. Too many or too few can cause problems.

MPV in PayPal

Mobile Payment Volume – I guess this is the number of people that are now using their mobile phones to pay. I must admit that since Boots, Ebay and other stores have a PayPal option I have used my phone more and more to order and pay for stuff. Quite dangerous really! Especially after a glass of wine. Ah well it’s a nice surprise when a parcel comes which I had forgotten I’d ordered. I just love PayPal because you don’t have to key in your credit card details every time.

MPV – Minimum Price Variation

This is something to do with the stock market, a subject which I know nothing about.

MPV – Mechanically Propelled Vehicle

Is this not a car – or another name for a car?

Conclusion

When using MPV to describe your 7-seater beware of all other connotations that it may or may not mean.

New Nissan Pathfinder unveiled

Originally derived from a compact pick-up truck platform, the new Nissan Pathfinder unveiled at this month’s Detroit Motor Show is something of a departure from the vehicle the company first started to produce in 1986. Redesigning the fourth generation of the popular SUV for the modern family, Nissan has focused less on off-road travel and more on comfort for the family, with a design that moves the Pathfinder firmly towards the SUV crossover segment of the market.

Previously the Nissan Pathfinder has come to be known as a truck that has slowly evolved as the market has moved away from strictly off-road vehicles to those which consider the family and road travel to a greater extent.

Nissan Pathfinder 3-3-2 Seat Configuration

The new 2013 model features three rows of seats in a 3-3-2 configuration, with monitors on the backs of the front-row seats and plenty of space extending all the way to the back of the vehicle. As per the standard five-door design, the second row of seats slides and folds forward to allow passengers access to the back row, which can be folded down for additional cargo space. This is fairly limited when all three rows are being used.

Nissan Pathfinder Aerodynamic Body

The real test in this segment is to fit in three rows of seats without producing a bulky, minivan exterior, and the new Pathfinder passes this test with flying colours. The body is aerodynamic, with a large front grill and headlights that slant back but not to the extent of other vehicles in this segment. Somehow the Pathfinder still creates the illusion of a slightly oversized crossover without piling on the pounds. It’s also got spoilers on the front and the rear, rear suspension fairings and tire deflectors to produce among the most aerodynamic offerings in this part of the market.

Nissan Pathfinder with Greater Fuel Efficiency

Despite a more sporty look, Nissan has kept things much more conservative under the bonnet. The new Pathfinder achieves greater fuel efficiency courtesy of its Continuously Variable Transmission coupled with a V6 engine. Together these elements provide a 25 per cent fuel saving, according to Nissan. Overall, the horsepower produced is only slightly below that of the third-generation Pathfinder, a considerable achievement given the large increase in fuel efficiency.

Nissan Pathfinder Launch in Europe

Consumers won’t have to wait much longer for Nissan’s radical new Pathfinder. It goes on sale in North America in the autumn, with a launch in Europe expected shortly afterwards. With some 1.2 million Pathfinders already sold in the vehicle’s 27 years, this latest edition looks set to extend the model’s life span by years yet.

Seven-seater cars are big behemoths that need care and attention when driving which is no different to driving any vehicle really, but due to most MPVs tipping the scales at two-tonnes and beyond, it’s your duty to be extra careful. Thankfully, most MPVs are front-wheel drive which is a little more forgiving than rear-wheel drive cars.

When you’re thinking of buying a seven-seater to cart your friends and family around in, you have to realise that no matter how many electronic aids that a manufacturer blankets the car in, such as stability control, ABS, traction control etc., there is still only one thing that can avoid an accident and that’s you! It might be a good idea to take a PassPlus driving test or invest in some advanced driving techniques training, as car control is not covered very well on regular UK driving tests. Inertia is one of the biggest reasons people have an accident in a larger, heavier vehicle and no electronic aid can stop it.

Learning to drive more smoothly when cornering, braking and accelerating are key points in keeping inertia in check. It’s a common misconception that new cars must be heavier than before due to safety, as extra side impact beams only weigh around 50-70kgs, the same as your average teenager. As cars become bigger and heavier, your driving style needs to adapt to the extra bulk of the seven-seater car and you shouldn’t rely on the electronic driver aids.

Understanding understeer and oversteer are important when driving a large car. Understeer occurs when the front wheels want to go straight ahead even though you’re turning the steering wheel. This happens when there is too much forward momentum and the tyres cannot cope. Oversteer is when the rear end of the car wants to overtake the front. This normally occurs with rear-wheel drive cars but it can happen in front-wheel drive ones if you turn a corner and lift off the accelerator quickly. Both are equally dangerous situations for you and other road users, and learning how to counter-act both is key when you’re in charge of a two-tonne weapon.

No one wants to admit that they might need extra help with their driving as the laws for going further aren’t mandatory, but that’s not to say it isn’t a good idea. There’s little argument against a few extra hours of tuition compared to having to deal with causing a fatal accident. Until car manufacturers begin to use lighter, stronger and more efficient materials that in turn have a direct effect on the overall weight of the vehicle, we need to be vigilant in driving safely. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to drive at 11mph everywhere but it does mean that you’re in total control should the need arise to correct a wayward 7 seater from barrelling down the road.
