The Japanese automaker has built on recent success with its super-sleek light commercial vehicle by announcing a new version for India that will be built in partnership with Ashok Leyland. It will see production begin at its plant near Chennai, in the south of the country. The India launch has been scheduled for the middle of the year and there is plenty more happening with the NV2000 elsewhere around the globe, too.

Perhaps the vehicle’s biggest coup to date was the announcement in May last year that it had won an exclusive new contract to provide New York City with 13,000 new cabs, starting from next year. This means it will be decked out in yellow and will be a mainstay of Manhattan and elsewhere across the Big Apple as part of a 10-year deal.

The European 1.5-litre diesel version does an impressive 54.4 miles per gallon in average driving conditions, but a new electric version of the NV2000 is also planned and could be a part of the New York City cab fleet by 2017, according to Nissan.

So what has made the Nissan NV2000 such a sensation since it was first launched as a concept vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show back in 2007? Well, the vehicle seems to have been able to turn what would appear to be a major weakness into a key strength. After all, not many van lookalikes manage to make it big in the passenger vehicle segment, especially with the advent of the SUV crossover 7-seaters that have taken the European and North American markets by storm in recent years.

Perhaps that is the secret of the NV2000. Where four-wheel drives and SUVs managed to evolve into large family vehicles that still look sleek and sporty, this Nissan vehicle seems to have followed, reinventing the concept in the van segment. After all, it looks like a van and can be used for cargo or transporting several passengers at once. But it does more than that.

New Nissan Pathfinder unveiled

Originally derived from a compact pick-up truck platform, the new Nissan Pathfinder unveiled at this month’s Detroit Motor Show is something of a departure from the vehicle the company first started to produce in 1986. Redesigning the fourth generation of the popular SUV for the modern family, Nissan has focused less on off-road travel and more on comfort for the family, with a design that moves the Pathfinder firmly towards the SUV crossover segment of the market.

Previously the Nissan Pathfinder has come to be known as a truck that has slowly evolved as the market has moved away from strictly off-road vehicles to those which consider the family and road travel to a greater extent.

Nissan Pathfinder 3-3-2 Seat Configuration

The new 2013 model features three rows of seats in a 3-3-2 configuration, with monitors on the backs of the front-row seats and plenty of space extending all the way to the back of the vehicle. As per the standard five-door design, the second row of seats slides and folds forward to allow passengers access to the back row, which can be folded down for additional cargo space. This is fairly limited when all three rows are being used.

Nissan Pathfinder Aerodynamic Body

The real test in this segment is to fit in three rows of seats without producing a bulky, minivan exterior, and the new Pathfinder passes this test with flying colours. The body is aerodynamic, with a large front grill and headlights that slant back but not to the extent of other vehicles in this segment. Somehow the Pathfinder still creates the illusion of a slightly oversized crossover without piling on the pounds. It’s also got spoilers on the front and the rear, rear suspension fairings and tire deflectors to produce among the most aerodynamic offerings in this part of the market.

Nissan Pathfinder with Greater Fuel Efficiency

Despite a more sporty look, Nissan has kept things much more conservative under the bonnet. The new Pathfinder achieves greater fuel efficiency courtesy of its Continuously Variable Transmission coupled with a V6 engine. Together these elements provide a 25 per cent fuel saving, according to Nissan. Overall, the horsepower produced is only slightly below that of the third-generation Pathfinder, a considerable achievement given the large increase in fuel efficiency.

Nissan Pathfinder Launch in Europe

Consumers won’t have to wait much longer for Nissan’s radical new Pathfinder. It goes on sale in North America in the autumn, with a launch in Europe expected shortly afterwards. With some 1.2 million Pathfinders already sold in the vehicle’s 27 years, this latest edition looks set to extend the model’s life span by years yet.

Slovakian Factory never sleeps

Following the success of the Touareg and the Audi Q7, both quality 7-seaters that have sold remarkably well in recent years, the German automaker Volkswagen is now running its factory in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, around the clock.

Factory produces parts for other high end MPVs

Although much of the auto industry has taken a battering in the past three or four years following the financial crisis and the subsequent drop in demand for new cars, Volkswagen has seen demand for its SUVs and MPVs go from strength to strength and has therefore been required to keep its Slovakia factory running round the clock. This is the facility where it produces parts for Audi’s popular high-end 7-seater (Q7) and the Porsche Cayenne, a 5-seater SUV.

Production to meet demand

Volkswagen first extended production hours to run round the clock in September 2010 in response to rising demand for these vehicles. Since then it has extended this production cycle three times, a sign that these vehicles have continued to sell well, and expects to keep production in Bratislava going 24 hours until the middle of 2012 at least. The plant only stops production on special holidays, including Christmas.

Touareg MPV Engines

So why are these vehicles selling so well? The Volkswagen Touareg, (mpv with 5-seats), built since 2002, holds the world record for towing the heaviest load by a passenger car when it pulled a Boeing 747 for a promotional campaign. Now in its second generation, the Touareg is available in a variety of engine sizes, including a three-litre supercharged V6 in diesel and petrol, a 3.6-litre V6, diesel and a powerful 4.2-litre V8 diesel.

Touareg Additional features

One of the great new features on this latest version of the VW Touareg is its glare-free high beam, which continuously adjusts the pattern and range of the high beam so that the area around vehicles in front is constantly illuminated, but the vehicles themselves are not. That is clever stuff. It also comes with a lane departure warning system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive air suspension and roll compensation.

New Audi Q7 – Seven Seat People Carrier

The Audi Q7, which became the German automaker’s first SUV back in 2005, is a high-end crossover with a 7-seat option. It remains remarkably popular. There is a new version for 2012 that adds on the facelift that the vehicle underwent in 2011, which saw the addition of start-stop fuel saving technology, reduced CO2 emissions and a wraparound tailgate. Plus there was a three-litre supercharged engine thrown into the mix which produces a hefty 272 horsepower and 295 horsepower.

Audi Q7 – In car Internet

For 2012 the main addition is the Audi Connect system, a new technology that adds internet POI search. This can be voice controlled or via input from the user and includes information such as news, weather and local fuel prices. Perhaps even more useful in this day in age is Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 8 devices within the vehicle.

Top end 7-seaters

With these impressive features, solid German engineering and a quality that is expected of both carmakers, there is little wonder that demand has been so high for the Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q7. In terms of the 7-seater market, these models are very much at the top of their respective classes.
