Toyota LC – Makeover

The king of SUVs is set for yet another makeover. The Land Cruiser is a four-wheel drive that just keeps on going, and has done since it first left Toyota’s factory in Aichi back in 1951. This was the same year the Korean War was in full swing, the Cold War hadn’t even been invented yet and Dennis the Menace cartoons appeared for the first time.

Toyota LC – 2013 re-launch

Now, 61 years later, the Toyota Land Cruiser is about to be re-launched again, with a new edition that looks as robust and stylish as ever. The 2013 version of the world’s oldest SUV is due to be showcased at the Chicago Auto Show in the second week of February. Expect upgrades galore. Features that were once considered optional on the Land Cruiser are set to come as standard, including trailer sway control, anti-lock breaking and turn assist steering. Inside, the Land Cruiser remains a high-quality affair but there are improvements too, including an additional 12 Volt DC power outlet to the rear of the centre console.

Toyota LC – Purchase Price

Prices start at just under £45,000 and go up to over £60,000.

Toyota LC – Exterior

The exterior features upgraded tail lamps and side mirrors, and under the bonnet you can expect a 5.7-litre V8 DOHC engine that produces 381 horsepower. That is the same as the top-of-the-range 200 series, the most current on the market. One of the big differences between these two latest versions is the body styling.

Toyota LC – Fewer Curves

Although the 2007 version introduced a new, stronger frame and redesigned roof pillars to better protect those inside during a rollover, the styling of the body was widely deemed to be a bit of a letdown. Not so with the new 2013 edition. Pictures released thus far suggest it will feature fewer curves but should represent a return to the more muscular looking Land Cruisers of days past, with refined, elegant styling up front.

Toyota LC – History

For Toyota, this latest makeover could not have come soon enough. In the world’s largest car market, the US, the Japanese automaker sold more than 3,800 units in 2008 but those numbers dropped off as the global financial crisis took hold, with just 2,220 units sold in 2009 and 1,800 in 2010. This contrasts sharply with the heady days at the turn of the millennium, when Toyota sold more than 15,500 Land Cruisers in 2000.

Toyota LC – Engine

Since the release of the 2007 version, there have been a few minor tweaks to the king of SUVs. In Japan, Toyota added a 4.6-litre V8 engine to its options list, while the gearbox also received something of a makeover, with a new six-speed automatic added. The new, smaller engine resulted in an overall upgrade, with a rise in horsepower from 284hp to 314hp.

Toyota LC – Additional Options

The options on the 2013 Land Cruiser remain unknown. Traditionally Toyota has offered a more limited range of trim levels in the US market compared to those in Japan, in particular, so expect the same this time round. Overall, the new version of the world’s oldest SUV is unlikely to pull off any surprises when it’s unveiled this month. After 61 years, that would be impossible and that’s not what this vehicle is about. The Land Cruiser is all about improving something that was near perfect previously, so expect more of the same.

Crossover SUV from Lamborghini

It won’t be the first luxury carmaker to move into the crossover market and it certainly won’t be the last, but for Lamborghini, the rising prospect of a new crossover SUV is perhaps a little unexpected. After all, the Italian automobile manufacturer usually deals in low slung sports cars rather than bulky SUVs. This looks set to change though.

Revealed at Beijing Motor Show

According to the Italian car magazine Quattroroute, Lamborghini is due to reveal its latest vehicle at the Beijing motor show in April. If its report is to be believed then the new SUV will be constructed around the Audi Q7 platform, with the details being secretly worked out under the codename LB 736. Engine-wise, we know little as yet but rumour has it that it is an electrically assisted V8 or even a V10 generating something in the region of 700 horsepower. It is a Lamborghini, after all.

SUV Exterior

In terms of the exterior, there is talk of an aluminum and carbon-fibre structure, which is standard issue for Lamborghini these days. Although it is tipped for its first appearance in April, we likely won’t see the vehicle on the roads until 2015. If it appears at all, that is, as Lamborghini hasn’t confirmed anything regarding this project to date.

Lamborghini SUV History

So things are still far from certain but in terms of what Lamborghini has done in the past, an SUV isn’t totally unheard of from the Italian sports car manufacturer. In fact, Lamborghini first built one back in 1986. Certainly back then its bulky LM002 was a departure from the norm. Dubbed the ‘Lambo Rambo’, the LM002 was an unexpected success due to its hardy performance, which proved particularly popular with rich Saudi Arabian sheiks and oil barons. At the time, very few cars were as hard wearing in the desert, not least because of its custom-made Pirelli Scorpion tyres. Specifically built to deal with the extreme power and conditions for which the LM002 was designed, there were two types available: one for mixed use and the other specifically for driving in unforgiving sand.

Given the hardy engineering of the LM002, it is hardly surprising that Lamborghini’s first foray into the SUV market was rumoured to be for military use. However, contrary to speculation, such a vehicle was never built. It was though based on a prototype vehicle that Lamborghini started working on back in 1977, which was codenamed ‘Cheetah’. Reports said the Italian sports car maker had hoped to sell the vehicle to the US military but it was completely destroyed during testing and never again saw the light of day.

Crossover SUVs – All the rage

Which brings us back to the expected showcasing of the latest Lamborghini effort to produce an SUV. Given the Italian firm has made one such vehicle before, which never came on the market – indeed, Lamborghini categorically denied the existence of this supposed crossover – such a vehicle doesn’t seem unfathomable. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that a Porsche SUV looked like a pipedream either and let’s face it, crossover SUVs are all the rage.

The Japanese automaker has built on recent success with its super-sleek light commercial vehicle by announcing a new version for India that will be built in partnership with Ashok Leyland. It will see production begin at its plant near Chennai, in the south of the country. The India launch has been scheduled for the middle of the year and there is plenty more happening with the NV2000 elsewhere around the globe, too.

Perhaps the vehicle’s biggest coup to date was the announcement in May last year that it had won an exclusive new contract to provide New York City with 13,000 new cabs, starting from next year. This means it will be decked out in yellow and will be a mainstay of Manhattan and elsewhere across the Big Apple as part of a 10-year deal.

The European 1.5-litre diesel version does an impressive 54.4 miles per gallon in average driving conditions, but a new electric version of the NV2000 is also planned and could be a part of the New York City cab fleet by 2017, according to Nissan.

So what has made the Nissan NV2000 such a sensation since it was first launched as a concept vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show back in 2007? Well, the vehicle seems to have been able to turn what would appear to be a major weakness into a key strength. After all, not many van lookalikes manage to make it big in the passenger vehicle segment, especially with the advent of the SUV crossover 7-seaters that have taken the European and North American markets by storm in recent years.

Perhaps that is the secret of the NV2000. Where four-wheel drives and SUVs managed to evolve into large family vehicles that still look sleek and sporty, this Nissan vehicle seems to have followed, reinventing the concept in the van segment. After all, it looks like a van and can be used for cargo or transporting several passengers at once. But it does more than that.
