Infinity the luxury overseas Nissan brand

Infiniti, the luxury overseas brand of Nissan, has specialised in saloons since its launch in North America at the end of 1989, with 7-seater offerings few and far between. The obvious exception to this rule was the bulky QX which featured a huge 5.6L V8 engine. However, Nissan is now set to launch a new Infiniti MPV in the coming months.

The Infiniti JX, as first seen at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show, will sit somewhere in between the FX and QX in terms of size, specs and price. It will feature a powerful 3.5-litre V6 engine in both front-wheel and four-wheel drive versions producing 265 horsepower. Fuel economy ratings are 17 miles per gallon in the city and 23 mpg on the motorway with prices starting at just over $40,000 in America, (£25,500 in the UK).

Infinity JX Options

In terms of options, Infiniti JX buyers will have the choice of seven body colours and three different interiors heavy on maple wood accents. Inside it looks nothing short of beautiful. The main console comes with a fine finish of metal and black, while the seats are decked out in leather as standard.

Where the Infiniti JX will break the mould compared to other vehicles produced by the Japanese automaker will be in features such as the Backup Collision Intervention system which automatically turns on the breaks ahead of an impending crash. It will also link up to Google Calendar and include Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Cruise Control and Around View Monitor. The sound system is set to be a 14-speaker Bose stereo. An Enhanced Intelligent Key is the coolest feature. It remembers a number of details about the previous driver including the last-used audio, climate control, the occupant’s seating position and navigation settings.

United Kingdom Sales

In terms of UK sales, there are no immediate plans to bring the Infiniti JX to these shores, partly because the market for crossover SUVs remains small here.  Nissan MPVs include the qashqai+2, Cube, Patrol GR and Pathfinder. That’s a shame because in its class this vehicle looks set to be a market leader in terms of quality, space and luxury. The interior offers bags of room even when seven people are onboard which is partly achieved through the long wheel base. It really is a huge looking vehicle when you see it from the outside. The front grill in particular looks very much like something you would be used to seeing on American roads.

Future release in UK?

This is why it is set to be released for the American market in particular with little anticipated scope for sales within Europe. Infiniti has had a presence in the UK for some time, releasing a number of vehicles here, but on the continent Nissan has been reluctant to start marketing efforts. The first official sales of Infiniti vehicles in Europe outside of the UK only began at the end of 2008.

Nissan has said it plans to launch the Infiniti JX in North America sometime in the Spring of next year. It will surely be a strong competitor in this increasingly crowded yet expanding market. The question is: Will it also be released in the UK?
